Process Modelling and Model Analysis, Volume 4 (Process Systems Engineering)

This book describes the use of models in process engineering. Process engineering is all about manufacturing--of just about anything! To manage processing and manufacturing systematically, the engineer has to bring together many different techniques and analyses of the interaction between various aspects of the process. For example, process engineers would apply models to perform feasibility analyses of novel process designs, assess environmental impact, and detect potential hazards or accidents. To manage complex systems and enable process design, the behavior of systems is reduced to simple mathematical forms. This book provides a systematic approach to the mathematical development of process models and explains how to analyze those models. Additionally, there is a comprehensive bibliography for further reading, a question and answer section, and an accompanying Web site developed by the authors with additional data and exercises. * Introduces a structured modeling methodology emphasizing the importance of the modeling goal and including key steps such as model verification, calibration, and validation.* Focuses on novel and advanced modeling techniques such as discrete, hybrid, hierarchical, and empirical modeling* Illustrates the notions, tools, and techniques of process modeling with examples and advances applications (read more ...)

A History of the Canadian Peoples 4e

Now in its fourth edition, A History of the Canadian Peoples continues to be a skilful condensation of the two-volume history by J.M. Bumsted. In a single articulate volume, it covers the whole of Canadian history from pre-contact times to the present, integrating social, cultural, political, and economic history into a coherent overarching narrative. The fourth edition includes more material on multiculturalism, immigration, and racism, specifically to the post-1918 chapters, as well as material on women and work in the 21st century. Many new historical images have been added to support the already robust photo and image program engaging the reader and drawing them into each time period discussed. Engrossing, thorough, and timely, J.M. Bumsted's narrative provides a comprehensive picture of Canada then and now. (read more ...)

Modelling Ocean Climate Variability

In this wide-ranging and comprehensive review of the historical development and current status of ocean circulation models, the analysis extends from simple analytical approaches to the latest high-resolution numerical models with data assimilation. The authors, both of whom are pioneer scientists in ocean and shelf sea modelling, look back at the evolution of Western and Eastern modelling methodologies during the second half of the last century. They also present the very latest information on ocean climate modelling and offer examples for a number of oceans and shelf seas. The book includes a critical analysis of literature on ocean climate variability modelling, as well as assessing the strengths and weaknesses of the best-known modelling techniques. It also anticipates future developments in the field, focusing on models based on a synthesis of numerical simulation and field observation, and on nonlinear thermodynamic model data synthesis. Reliability Modelling: A Statistical Approach

Reliability is an essential concept in mathematics, computing, research, and all disciplines of engineering, and reliability as a characteristic is, in fact, a probability. Therefore, in this book, the author uses the statistical approach to reliability modelling along with the MINITAB software package to provide a comprehensive treatment of modelling, from the basics through advanced modelling techniques. The book begins by presenting a thorough grounding in the elements of modelling the lifetime of a single, non-repairable unit. Assuming no prior knowledge of the subject, the author includes a guide to all the fundamentals of probability theory, defines the various measures associated with reliability, then describes and discusses the more common lifetime models: the exponential, Weibull, normal, lognormal and gamma distributions. She concludes the groundwork by looking at ways of choosing and fitting the most appropriate model to a given data set, paying particular attention to two critical points: the effect of censored data and estimating lifetimes in the tail of the distribution. The focus then shifts to topics somewhat more difficult:the difference in the analysis of lifetimes for repairable versus non-repairable systems and whether repair truly "renews" the systemmethods for dealing with system with reliability characteristic specified for more than one component or subsystemthe effect of different types of maintenance strategiesthe analysis of life test dataThe final chapter provides snapshot introductions to a range of advanced models and presents two case studies that illustrate various ideas from throughout the book. Creating a Climate for Giving

Church leaders are often heard to say that old ways aren't working any longer. Creating a Climate for Giving brings a vision for a fresh way of creating a climate for giving in local churches. Joiner explores the subsystems through which a church leads its members to give or not to give. We must refine "fund-raising" to "funding ministry." In the interim between being a "fund-raising church" and becoming a "funding ministry church," finance leaders will continue to need models demonstrating how to operate the short-term finance ministries of their church. This is where Joiner can help. (A financial campaign for developing Christian philanthropists is included.) (read more ...)
